MarQuip Facilitates Transition to Tier III Benchmark
The Tier III regulations of the United Nations International Marine Organization (IMO) regarding marine emissions came into force on 1 January.
They specify a reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions by nearly 80% compared to Tier II and apply in specific Emission Control Areas, which for the time being include North America and the US Caribbean. MarQuip has developed certification and design solutions to streamline your switch to the new standard.
Tier III certification
IMO Tier III requirements will have major repercussions on new builds. There are many ways to approach the certification process and at MarQuip we offer solutions based on what best suits each individual yard. We offer tailored advice and support in the following ways:
• The certificate is conferred on the yard, while MarQuip and the engine manufacturer work together as subcontractors for the yard in a coordinating and facilitating role.
• The certificate is conferred on the vessel, while MarQuip and the engine manufacturer work together as subcontractors for the yard in a coordinating and facilitating role.
• The certificate is conferred on the engine manufacturer, while MarQuip functions as a supplier to the engine manufacturer; the engine manufacturer is the principal contractor with final responsibility for the certification process.
• The certificate is conferred on MarQuip, and we take final responsibility for the certification process together with the engine manufacturer and our partners in the field of SCR technology.
Practical applications
MarQuip currently has several projects in the engineering phase in places ranging from the Netherlands and Germany to Turkey. The precise nature of our involvement varies from yard to yard: we adapt the approach to the yard’s preferences and find a suitable solution within those parameters. We are also in direct contact with Lloyds, DNV GL and similar organisations, using this to our partners’ advantage wherever possible.
MarQuip always takes full responsibility for the functioning of the exhaust systems we conceive, design and produce, and which the yard approves. We also cover the entire range of needs related to the certification process. As an independent partner and system integrator, we will bring the standalone units of your exhaust system together into a well-functioning whole.
Backpressure control
IMO Tier III emission regulations will make backpressure control considerably more important. They require the installation of additional after-treatment systems, which forces manufacturers to reduce maximum allowable backpressure in their engines.
MarQuip offers complete backpressure control for all kinds of exhaust systems, whether wet/dry or underwater. Having fitted more than 300 systems currently in use all over the world, we have the experience necessary to address the challenge posed by Tier III constraints. Our latest development – a combined silencer/after treatment system – will help achieve the best Tier-III-compliant exhaust system within the maximum backpressure values allowed by the engine manufacturers.
