Printed Glass Brings new Edge to Superyacht Design
Designers and naval architects are set to have a new creative means to help them bring their designs to life. Glasshape’s VisionInk combines the company’s long experience with marine glass solutions, adding the ability to print in ultra-fine detail and full colour on an already remarkable substrate.
The technology, which was showcased to the superyacht industry at METS by Glasshape, adds an exciting new aesthetic medium to the designer’s arsenal, but also holds significant benefits for naval architects.
While new to the superyacht industry, the process behind VisionInk has already been proven on land, with its uses including solar control and the replication of other building materials. For the superyacht industry, this means that materials like heavy slates and marbles can be reproduced on a more malleable glass, with considerable weight savings, a real advantage for naval architects seeking to increase the efficiency of their designs.
Highly durable ceramic inks are indelibly bonded into the glass, easily implementing patterns and designs. Nearly unlimited colours, the ultra-fine (720dpi) detailing can turn plain balustrading, partitioning and windows into impressive works of art, as well as providing the possibility to replicate otherwise restricted materials such as scarce native timbers.
The process is compatible with the company’s flagship DuraShield Marine and TemperShield brands and can be curved, allowing complete freedom of design. The technology can create double-vision designs for different front and back imagery and non-slip surfaces. VisionInk is extremely resistant to scratching, solvents, UV light and harsh weather conditions, is fully recyclable and has been created within the principles of leading environmental measures including LEED and GreenStar. glasshape.com
