Yachting Salary Secrets Revealed

Yacht crew recruitment agency, YPI CREW, has launched a new peer-to-peer salary comparison website for the yachting industry for greater transparency on how much crew really earn. The website has attracted over 100 salary entries since launching only a few weeks ago, offering the most comprehensive and up-to-date salary data within the global yachting industry, free for anyone to access.

Laurence Lewis, Director of YPI CREW, explains, “We wanted to take the traditional paper-based salary survey to a whole new level. We are often asked by captains working on their annual budget for salary information and, likewise, many candidates ask for advice. We have always felt frustrated with the yearly review we used to produce as the salary ranges presented were so broad that in reality they were of little use. We realised that there is a real trend for people to freely exchange valuable information and this current concept taps into that trend”.

Yachtingsalaries.com operates on a “give to get” model: You provide accurate and anonymous salary data by answering a few questions about your current role and in return you can access the salary information shared by other members.

Obviously the site relies on honesty, but there is no incentive for members of the yachtng community to mislead other people about what they earn. Any unusually inflated or inconsistent salaries can be flagged as suspicious by other members, or by YPI CREW, and removed from the system to ensure the data is more accurate. The site also uses median values (as opposed to averages) reducing the impact of any extreme entries.

So far the yachting community has embraced the concept with open arms. “We have been overwhelmed by the response to the site so far,” explains Laurence, “People have contacted us to say how grateful they are to finally have access to a salary resource that considers more than just a person’s job title and size of yacht."

Another key difference compared to traditional annual salary surveys is that data is added by visitors on a daily basis, making the data more current.  

Laurence concludes: “As salary entries continue to grow each day, beyond the 323 salaries we’ve already captured, our hope is that the site becomes a rich and indispensable resource that is continually referred to by yacht crew and employers alike.”
